Problem: How to authorize/activate a Nook with Adobe Digital Editions on a computer

FYI:   This is also the solution for the same problem regarding the Pandigital device(and maybe other readers that are n ot Android, BlackBerry, iPhone, or Windows Mobile devices).

Solution:
How to authorize a Nook with Adobe Digital Editions.docx

1.   If you have not registered your Nook with Barnes & Noble, do so.

2.   On your computer, install Adobe Digital Editions (ADE). Apply for an Adobe ID if you do not have one. Authorize the computer with your Adobe ID.

3.   Open a web browser, go to the JCLC downloadable website and log in.

4.   Check out an eBook. Click Download. A dialog box will open, select “Open with Adobe Digital Editions”. The eBook will appear in ADE.

5.   Plug fully charged Nook into your computer with ADE open. Authorize the device. The Nook icon, “media”, or "nook" [or "PD_NOVEL" for Pandigital device] will appear at the bottom of the left menu in ADE.

6.   Click “All Items”. Drag the eBook to the Nook icon,“media”, or "nook" [or "PD_NOVEL" for Pandigital device] and release. The eBook is now located on the Nook. Safely eject Nook from the computer.

7.  On your Nook, find the eBook in the Files folder or use the Search feature to locate it.

Problem: How to download and read eBooks on an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad (must have iOS 4.0)

Solution: Install the Overdrive Media Console app from the Apple App store.

Follow the tutorial for How to Download eBooks to your iPad

Problem: Adobe Digital Editions is authorized/activated with another person's Adobe ID/Password and needs to be changed

A patron authorized/activated ADE on her computer with her husband's Adobe ID. Now she wants to change that and authorize it using her own ID so she can access her downloadable eBook account.

Solution: How to remove the Adobe Digital Editions ID.doc

1.    Open Adobe Digital Editions
2.    Press CTRL+SHIFT+D (Win) and CMD+SHIFT+D (Mac)
       - Deauthorize Computer screen will appear explaining – "Are you sure you want to deauthorize this computer? If you have protected items in your Digital Editions library, they may no longer be readable."
       - Select Deauthorize
       - After selecting "Deauthorize" – a message appears stating "Your computer was successfully deauthorized. Restarting Adobe Editions will require you to reactivate your computer."
       - Click on "Quit"
3.    Adobe Digital Editions will close
4.    Double-click on the Adobe Digital Editions shortcut to reopen
5.    The Setup Assistant will appear, click "Continue"
       - Authorize/activate the computer with a new Adobe ID

Problem: Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) will not recognize Nook

The problem is probably that your Nook came preloaded with an ADE folder on it and because of that your ADE program won't recognize it.

Solution: ADE does not recognize Nook.doc

  1. Go to "My Computer" (or the equivalent on your PC or MAC)
  2. Click on the Nook drive
  3. Find and delete the file ".adobe-digital-editions" (but before deleting, place a copy on your desktop for backup)
  4. Safely eject and unplug the nook from the computer
  5. Close Adobe Digital Editions
  6. Restart Adobe Digital Editions
  7. Plug the Nook to the computer
  8. Adobe Digital Editions should display the Nook icon and prompt you to authorize the device.
  9. If not, go back to the Nook drive in "My Computer"
  10. Find and delete the "Digital Editions" file
  11. Close Adobe Digital Editions
  12. Restart Adobe Digital Editions
  13. Adobe Digital Editions should display the Nook icon and prompt you to authorize the device.
  14. Authorize the device.
  15. You can transfer books now!

Problem: How to return an eBook on a Nook before the check out period is up

Solution:

1.  In Adobe Digital Editions, click the icon at the top left that looks like three books standing on a shelf

2.  Click the eBook you want to return

3.  You will see an arrow at the top left corner of the eBook

4.  Click the arrow and choose to "Return Borrowed Item"

5.  Next, to remove it from your Nook, plug your Nook into your computer

6.  In Adobe Digital Editions, click the "nook" or "media" icon to view your Nook’s eBook library and repeat the procedure #2 through #4 above

7.  Refresh your account and the eBook should be gone

Problem: How to return an eBook on an iPad, iPhone and Touch before the check out period is up. Overdrive does not provide this feature, however below is a work-around.

Solution:

1.  To remove the eBook from your iPad, tap Library, tap Edit, then tap the Delete button (red circle with a hyphen) on the left side of the eBook

2.  To return the eBook, download the eBook from your account to Adobe Digital Editions on your computer

3.  In ADE, click the icon at the top left that looks like three books standing on a shelf

4.  Click the eBook you want to return

5.  You will see an arrow at the top left corner of the eBook

6.  Click the arrow and choose to "Return Borrowed Item"

7.  Refresh your account and the eBook should be gone

Problem Scenario:

A patron has checked out an eBook and transfers the item to their Nook.  After transferring the item to their Nook the patron then returns the item.  How can a patron tell when the eBook will expire off of their Nook?

Solution:

Patrons may follow the below instructions if they want to know when a title will expire from their Nook:

1.  Connect the Nook to the computer and open Adobe Digital Editions.
2.  Click on the 'Nook' icon in 'Library View'.
3.  The titles that are on the device will show.
4.  Select the appropriate title, click the arrow in the left corner of the title and select 'Item Info'.

Once this is done, a screen will open showing the requested information.

Unfortunately, there is not a way to tell when a book will expire from a patron's Nook without connecting the Nook to a computer.

Problem: A patron gets a "user not activated" error message when trying to open Overdrive books on his/her Nook.

Solution:   ADE does not recognize Nook

  1. Go to "My Computer" (or the equivalent on your PC or MAC)
  2. Click on the Nook drive
  3. Find and delete the file ".adobe-digital-editions" (but before deleting, place a copy on your desktop for backup)
  4. Safely eject and unplug the nook from the computer
  5. Close Adobe Digital Editions
  6. Restart Adobe Digital Editions
  7. Plug the Nook to the computer
  8. Adobe Digital Editions should display the Nook icon and prompt you to authorize the device.
  9. If not, go back to the Nook drive in "My Computer"
  10. Find and delete the "Digital Editions" file
  11. Close Adobe Digital Editions
  12. Restart Adobe Digital Editions
  13. Adobe Digital Editions should display the Nook icon and prompt you to authorize the device.
  14. Authorize the device.
  15. You can transfer books now!

Problem: IO Error on Network Request

Patron:

I am having downloading digital books. The downloads seem to take
place, and the title appears on the Adobe Digital, but then I get the
  following error message:

  IO Error on Network Request.

Solution #1:

1. Open the Documents\My Digital Editions directory. Open the "Restore" folder, then open the "tasks" folder and delete the folder contents. 2. From Documents\My Digital Editions\Restore, open the "failed" folder and delete the folder contents. 3. Check the following settings: - Are you running a firewall? This can include the built in Windows firewall as well as third party applications, such as Zone Alarm or Norton Internet Security. Firewall settings may be blocking Adobe software from the internet. - Are you running a web accelerator? If so, please disable it. - Do you have a pop-up blocker? Please disable it, temporarily. - Do you have any parental control software installed? If so, please disable it. - Is Internet Explorer set to the default security level? To check that, please do the following: * In Internet Explorer, go to Tools \ Internet Options. * Select the Security tab and click the Internet icon. * In the 'Security level for this zone' portion of the window, click 'Default Level' to set the level to 'Medium'. * Click 'OK' and close the browser. 4. Try to download your book again.

Solution #2:

The error message your patron is receiving usually indicates that something has
interfered with the download process. Clearing out the files referenced in the
email will completely remove the previous download attempt. If your patron has
been able to complete these steps, we would next recommend looking closer at local
security settings outlined in step #3 below.

If your patron is connecting to a network or WIFI connection, it is possible that
there is a local security setting on the network (wireless router) causing this
issue. If your patron is connecting to a wireless router, we would recommend
bypassing the wireless connection, if possible, to see if this error continues.

FYI:

Many patrons have reported success overcoming this error by attempting the download at
a much different time of day than they usually attempt downloads, such as, 6AM.
After all, ADE's solution to the problem is to "keep trying", so...

A patron is having trouble downloading an eBook to her laptop (running Vista) and using Adobe Digital Editions (ADE). She has downloaded many titles previously, but now is getting this error.

Solution:

After searching the Internet, this seems to be an undefined error. Patron was advised to reboot her laptop. She reopened ADE and after a few minutes the download started and was complete. The error seems to have been a download error and may have been an Overdrive issue where the connection needed to be reset. Or simply rebooting the laptop reset the applications.

Problem:  Error retrieving Media Library list.

A patron has downloaded the android version of the OverDrive Media Console
to their android phone. She has downloaded ebooks successfully numerous
times. However, she now gets the following message:

 OverDrive Media Console
 Error retrieving Media Library list.
AdobeEPUB is not a constant in the enum type class com.overdrive.mobile.
 android.mediaconsole.framework. ContentFormat (error code 1006)

Solution:

May be an android version compatibility problem. Try reloading the OverDrive Media
Console for the android again.

Problem:    "The media file is Corrupted" error

Solution:

Install the latest version of Adobe Digital Editions to view your Adobe
eBook(s). Adobe Digital Editions can be downloaded and installed from
this page:

Additionally, we also recommend making sure the ACSM file association is
set correctly. Please take the following steps to try that?

1. 'Control-click' the 'urllink.acsm' file and select 'Get Info'.
2. Expand the 'Open with:' section.
3. In the list of programs displayed, select Adobe Digital Editions.
(You may need to select 'Other' in order to select the program from your
list of installed applications.)
4. Click the 'Change All...' button. You should be prompted with a
message asking if you wish to apply the change to all documents with the
.acsm extension.
5. Click Continue.
6. Close the Info window.

Next, authorize your computer with your Adobe ID. You can then
re-download the title(s), connect your device (with Adobe Digital
Editions opened) and authorize the device. From there, you can drag and
drop the title over to your device in the library view of Adobe Digital
Editions. Please let us know if this helps, or if you continue to have
trouble.

Problem:     Error 0xC 00D2711

From Patron:

Error message: Error 0xC 00D2711: A problem has occured in the Digital Rights Management component. Contact product support for this application.

Problem:

I pressed "download" on the title I wish to download to my computer from the library. A pop-up shows me where the item will be placed on my computer. I press OK and the error message mentioned above pops up. I am currently unable to download anything. I am a first time user. I did downloaded 3 books succesfully and transferred one book succesfully to my sons ipod touch. I initially had problems with my Windows Media player version which I upgraded to 11.0 from 10.0. I am unable to listen to the two books I was able to download prior to upgrading my media player.

Solution:

We think the error they are receiving can be resolved by resetting the DRM (Digital Rights Management) for Windows Media Player.
Please ask them to perform the following steps to reset the DRM.

1. Open the Control Panel.

2. Open Folder Options and select the View tab.

3. Select Show hidden files and folders.

4. Un-check Hide protected operating system files.

5. In the warning message you receive, click Yes.

6. Click OK.

7. Close the Control Panel.

8. Rename the DRM folder to DRM.old.

Depending on your OS, it can be found in different locations:
- Windows 2000 and XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\ DRM
- Windows 98: C:\Windows\All Users\DRM
- Windows ME: C:\Windows\DRM

9. Close this window and open OverDrive Media Console.

10. Go to Tools > Windows Media Player Security Upgrade.

If above does not exist:
'fully' uninstall Windows Media Player 11 on a Windows XP computer, and then reinstall it. We apologize, but this is an involved process, please follow each step carefully.

First, please follow these steps to see hidden files and folders:

1. Go to 'Start' \ 'Settings' \ 'Control Panel'.
2. Open 'Folder Options'
3. Select the 'View' tab.
4. Select "Show hidden files and folders".
5. Make sure "Hide protected operating system files" is NOT selected.
(In the warning message you receive, click 'Yes'.)
6. Click 'OK.
7. Close the Control Panel.

Next, please follow these steps to reinstall Windows Media Player 11:

1. At the following Microsoft website, take the steps listed under

Problem:     Error Message: The computer is not authorized to preview this book (-475)

                         Error Message: E_LIC_ALREADY_FULFILLED_BY_ANOTHER_USER

From Patron:

I checked out a few books from the library over the past few weeks to read on my Sony eReader. Last night, I purchased a book from the Sony store for the first time& in the process had to authorize my computer, which I thought I already had done. After authorizing my account, I can no longer read the library books& am getting an error -475. I spoke with Sony customer support tonight& they said that when I was checking out books at the library I was using a "dummy" account because I had actually not authorized my account previously. I would love to read the above two books, but I would need to somehow have my account authorized. Is that something you can change or do I need to wait until the books expire and then check them out again?

Solution:

Try dragging the ebooks from Adobe Digital Editions to your Sony eReader again. If that doesn't
work, download the eBook from the library site again and drag it from ADE to your reader.
This may lead to the following error:
<em>&nbsp;&nbsp;</em><em>Error getting license</em>
<em> &nbsp;</em><em>License server communication problem:</em>
<em> &nbsp;</em><em>E_LIC_ALREADY_FULFILLED_BY_ANOTHER_USER

If this error is received contact OverDrive support with the library card number and the title
to have the title reauthorized.

From Patron:

Lost connection while downloading and will not allow me to retry to download now

Quick Solution(try first) :

There are a couple of possible causes for this issue: - The user may have had their webpage open for a long time before clicking 'download'. In this case, they should refresh the page and try again. - The clock on the user's computer is set to a different time zone, or is not accurate. If this is the case, please check and update the computer's time.

Longer Solution:

If above does not work:
The part may have been corrupted during download. Would you please ask your patron to take the following steps to download
the part again?

1. Clear the Temporary Internet Files.
If you have Internet Explorer 6:
- In Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet Options.
- On the 'General' tab, in the 'Temporary Internet Files' section, click
the 'Delete Files' button.
- Check the 'Delete all offline content' checkbox.
- Click 'OK'.

If you have Internet Explorer 7:
- In Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet Options.
- On the 'General' tab, in the 'Browsing history' section, click the
'Delete' button.
- Click the 'Delete files' button under the 'Temporary Internet Files'
heading.
- Click 'Yes'.

If you have Internet Explorer 8:
- In Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet Options.
- On the 'General' tab, in the 'Browsing history' section, click the
'Delete' button.
- In the Delete Browsing History dialog box, clear all of the check
boxes except for 'Temporary Internet Files'.
- Click 'Delete'.

2. Locate this folder:  \My Documents\My Media\[format]\[title]\
- Delete the file for the part that will not play.

3. Open the OverDrive Media Console.

4. Select the title and click "Download". Make sure each part that was
just deleted is selected and click OK.

5. Try to play the part.

<span style="font-family: Verdana;" _mce_style="font-family: Verdana;">This problem may be caused by a bad or weak internet connection or a problem with

</strong>

We recommend that the patron clear their browser's Internet cache and then attempt to download this
title from their library account again. If problems persists, we suggest that
your patron download and install the SkyFire or Dolphin browser. Both of these
browsers can be downloaded from the Android Market. Once your patron has done
this, have them attempt to download the title again using one of these
browsers.

Problem:   Is a user license for group/institution allowed?

Can public school library media centers have a library card account in order to download
books for their school? What, if any, are the limitations?

Solution:

The license to use the titles is a per user, so using a general account for an institution
would be a violation of the terms of use for the eBooks and Audiobooks. <span style="color: #ff0000;" _mce_style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>NOT ALLOWED</strong></span>

Problem:   Sony Reader Page Error

Patron Problem:
I am able to download the book to the PC. I can read it onthe PC, but when I copy
it to the Sony Reader, I do not see the cover page and when I open it, I get
"Page Error." I have download a couple of books previously and they loaded. I
just loaded another book to see if it worked. It did. Do you have any idea what
          the problem might be?

Solution:

From OverDrive:
This is a known issue with some Sony Readers, wherein if borrowed eBooks in one format are
used on the Reader, then a borrowed eBook in an alternate format is transferred to the same
Sony Reader, eBooks in the most recently transferred format will function while eBooks in
the first format will show the 'Protected Page' error. To use the desired format, please
have your patron transfer a title in that same exact format again. All borrowed titles in
this most recently transferred format will be usable. We also hope that Sony will release
updates for their devices that will correct this issue with older devices. That said, the
issue should no longer exist with Sony Reader models PRS-900, 350, 650, and 950.

FYI - we only purchase EPUB formatted eBooks so I don't know if this will solve the problems.
If it is known problem, perhaps whatever fix might be available will resolve this as well.

Problem:   WiFi vs 3G Download

Patron Question:
I have the OverDrive app on my iPhone. Sometimes when I check out a
book, I can download it over 3G. Other times I am told that I must
have Wi-Fi. Can you please tell me which titles can be checked out
over 3G? Otherwise I could reach my book limit by checking out
books that I can never download because I don't have WiFi.

Answer:

From OverDrive:
Any file size over 20MB will need to be downloaded using a WiFi
connection instead of a cellular connection. Unfortunately, this is an Apple
restriction and not an OverDrive setting.
